Selamat Berbuka Puasa
Ramadan occurs every year and is a beautiful period where you get to gather around with your close ones while breaking fast together. It is the most important month in the Islamic calendar, as it is a time for self reflection and self discipline. This is a month which encourages the act of generosity and charity.
Evenings are a hugely social time as the sun sets, with restaurants booked out months in advance and amazing feasts to break the fast. In Indonesia, the range of food during Iftar is amazing. People will usually start with a warm beverage such as tea. Then proceed to eat little snacks such as 'gorengan', 'onde onde' or 'pisang molen'. In between that, you can have colder beverages too if you desire. Like 'es teller', 'es cendol' or 'es campur' for example. Following this, more food is prepared and served as main courses. Now in this case, it really depends on the different families and groups of people. Some may eat 'ayam goreng', 'ikan sambal', 'ketupat'... It really depends, but what is always a guarantee is the smiles and laughter you will get while enjoying food together.
Here are the ingredients for a simple but very refreshing es teler which you may try at home.
Ingredients:
1 young coconut, rip out the meat with a spoon
2 ripe avocados, cut into dice
100 gr jackfruit, cut into diced
6 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
6 tablespoons cocopandan syrup
1/2 cup coconut cream
shaved ice
