CELEBRATING JAKARTA - The city that never stops moving.

I’ve spent most of my life here. Jakarta and I have grown up together in a way. And this June, my beloved city is celebrating its 499th birthday. Can you believe it?

People who don’t live here often think they know Jakarta. They picture the traffic, the heat, the floods—and yes, those things are part of the story. But they’re only a small chapter. To me, Jakarta is vibrant, resilient, and endlessly alive. It’s a city that keeps moving, keeps dreaming, and somehow finds a way to pull you into its rhythm. You don’t simply live here; you become a part of it.

And this June, the city feels especially magical. There’s a buzz in the air, a sense of celebration around every corner. So let me share a few things happening this month, because if you knew where to look, I think you’d fall in love with Jakarta too.

Let’s start with the art. Beneath all the glass towers and busy streets, Jakarta has a beautiful soul. Until 30th of June, At Galeri Nasional, the Indonesian Woman Artist exhibition offers a powerful and moving perspective that stays with you long after you leave. Through this exhibition, visitors will be presented with various works that serve as markers on a map while also opening new dimensions into how knowledge is shaped, felt, and passed down. From 13th June to 14 October 2026, over at Museum MACAN, Period Piece, the exhibition by Indonesian artist and filmmaker Riar Rizaldi focuses on Asymptotic Cinema (2026), a new installation commissioned specifically for the museum. If you’re drawn to something more traditional, from now until the 5th of July 2026, Museum Nasional’s Pameran Seni Ukir showcases intricate wood carvings that remind us of the rich creativity that existed here long before the skyline took shape. And for something a little more playful and unconventional, until the 10th of June 2026,Dia.Lo.Gue Art Space is hosting the fine art exhibition titled 'Di Mata Dekat' (Through Close Eyes) is a collaborative exhibition featuring three artists: Radetyo Itok, Hagung, and Sihag Bre Noname.

Then there’s JIEXPO, home to the legendary Jakarta Fair from 11th of June to 12th July 2026. It’s our annual celebration of everything joyful and chaotic. Think colorful lights, delicious street food, carnival rides, live music, and crowds of people making memories together. It’s lively, noisy, a little overwhelming, and completely unforgettable. You might arrive for the bargains, but you’ll stay for the atmosphere.

And if shopping is your thing, you’re in luck. The Jakarta Great Sale is back, and it’s bigger than ever. More than 100 department stores across the city are offering special promotions, from Grand Indonesia to Blok M and beyond. It’s the perfect excuse to wander, explore, and maybe treat yourself along the way.

People often ask me why I don’t move somewhere quieter. Somewhere calmer. Somewhere that seems easier. But Jakarta was never meant to be easy. Its charm lies in its energy, its contrasts, and the way it keeps reinventing itself while staying true to its heart.

This June, Jakarta is throwing a birthday party—and everyone’s invited. Come get caught in traffic with me. We’ll share some good food, discover beautiful art, and celebrate the city that never stops moving.

Selamat ulang tahun, Jakarta. May your spirit continue to inspire us for many years to come.
