An Afternoon with Cartier at National Gallery Victoria, Melbourne

 

Stepping into the Cartier exhibition at NGV feels like entering a world where time slows down, and every detail asks to be looked at twice.

Nearly 400 jewels, timepieces and objects unfold across the exhibition, tracing Cartier’s journey from the elegance of the early 20th century to its most contemporary expressions. Yet what stayed with me was not simply the extraordinary beauty of the pieces, but the stories held within them—of royalty, Hollywood icons, collectors and the many hands that brought these objects to life.

There is something deeply intimate about seeing the original sketches, design drawings and photographs from the Cartier archives alongside the finished jewels. Suddenly, the perfection feels human. You begin to see the thought, patience and imagination behind every curve, stone and setting.

Walking through the galleries, I found myself drawn not only to the brilliance of the diamonds and gemstones, but to Cartier’s remarkable ability to turn jewellery into an expression of art, architecture and culture. Each piece seemed to carry its own personality, a quiet conversation between craftsmanship and time.

The exhibition itself is beautifully considered, with a design collaboration between NGV, Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD creating an atmosphere that feels both immersive and refined.

Leaving the exhibition, I was reminded that true elegance is rarely about excess. It is about imagination, craftsmanship and the ability to create something that continues to speak across generations.

And perhaps that is Cartier’s most enduring beauty—not simply that its jewels shine, but that they continue to tell stories long after the moment they were first worn.
